Deep River Badminton Club

(a) Level of play:  not high, we have all levels, from beginner to about slightly above average (my level).  We have about five or six tournament competitive adult players, a whole lot of recreational adults and some who come out to sweat.  We have a few fairly good (five to six) High School students, a whole bunch (ten to fifteen) of promising 14-year olds, another lot of  (about seven or eight) good under-14.  The rest are of varying skills, under the category general players, but none the less make the club go around, and are just as important.

(b)   We offer training for juniors under the municipal-sponsored (town) program:  about 30 who pay $15 for fifteen hours, one hour each session.  We also offer less formal in-club training for all levels - juniors who wish to play better and seniors (adults) who like to play better.

(c)    The club accepts juniors and adults (seniors).  The only limitation appears to be over seven years old.

(d)    Six full size gyms and three smaller gyms.  For the small gyms, however, the back-courts are very close to the wall.  3.5 hours for adults and 12 hours per week for juniors.  (The following information should be left out of the website - adults have access to play for extra 3 hours as supervisors on Saturday in the youth program.  I usually use it to teach the keen ones.)  Pretty good facility for a town of 4000.

(e)    The club offers family rates; as a result we have a fair number of families playing.  The club is “unique”, having more than half of the ethnic Chinese families in town, roughly ten to twelve families;  the next major “minority” ethnic group among the adults are ethnic East Indians.  But what makes the Club tick, “unique” as well, is the true Canadian outlook in the Club – no discrimination, all colours and background.  There are about more than twice as many juniors as adults.

(f)     Not much social activities are organised among the adults, we always appear to manage a year-end party at a pub or somewhere.  The children have a great time doing tournaments, coaching clinics, etc.

(g)     In-club tournaments and the Junior Open every year in October/November.  We organise    the Upper Ottawa Valley events from time to time.

Note: The Club is “NOT FULL”.  We accept anyone who likes to play, casually by the night,     or late in the season as members when we offer reduced rates.
