Andrew D'Souza of the RA Badminton Club added the title of Pan-Am Under 19 Boys Singles Champion to his list of accomplishments today in Edmonton, Alberta by defeating fellow Canadian Benny Lin in straight sets (21-10, 21-19) in the gold medal match.
Andrew, seeded three-four, started the tournament on Wednesday with a hard fought three set victory over Daniel Chow of the USA (16-21, 21-10, 21-17) in the morning and followed with a dominant performance in the afternoon, winning 21-4, 21-7 over Igor Ibrahim of Brazil. Next up were equally impressive wins (21-7, 21-13) over Jamari Rose of Jamaica in the quarter-finals and (21-12, 21-11) over Kenneth Kuo of the USA in the semi-final to set-up today’s gold medal match.
In addition to his gold medal, D’Souza also picked up a Bronze medal in Under 19 Mixed Doubles partnering Vivian Kwok of Toronto. Vivian teamed up with Qufei Chen of the RA Badminton Club to add a second bronze medal in Under 19 Girls Doubles and Qufei added another Bronze medal in Under 19 Girls Singles. Qufei, un seeded in the tournament defeated the top seed Luana Vincente 21-18, 21-8 in the quarter-finals before losing to Iris Wang of the USA in the semi-final. Iris went on to win the gold Medalist.
