Commonwealth Games 2014 Glasgow

The RABC’s Andrew D’Souza travelled to Scotland at the end of July to represent Canada at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. In the team event, Andrew opened with singles victories over Falkland Islander Douglas Brown, Daniel Font of Wales and Jeff Tho of Australia. These wins helped Canada win their pool and advance to the quarterfinals against India. Andrew lost his singles match against Kashyap Parupalli (who was the eventual Gold medalist in the individual Men’s singles) as Canada was eliminated from the team event, losing 3-1.

In the individual events, Andrew competed in singles and men’s doubles with Vancouver’s Toby Ng. Their doubles event ended quickly with a round of 32 loss to Malaysians Wee Kiong Tan and Wei Shem Goh who would go on to win the Gold Medal. In singles, Andrew began with wins over Kenya’s Patrick Kinyua Mbogo and Ghana’s Emmanuel Donkor. This took Andrew to a round of 16 matchup with India’s R V Gurusaidutt. For Andrew his Games would end here with a loss while Gurusaidutt would go on to win the Bronze Medal.

Canada’s only badminton medal would go to Michelle Li who took the Gold in Women’s Singles with wins over world #11 R V Sindhu of India and #17 Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland.
