Singles play began at the Yonex Junior Elite Series Badminton Tournament today, with the RA Badmintons Club’s Qufei Chen, seeded first in Girls Under 16, advancing to the finals with convincing wins over Frederique Dumont and Camille Lefebvre of Quebec 21-4, 21-8, and 21-10, 21-11. and Andrianna Giuffre of Alberta 21-13, 21-9 I. In the other semi-final Rachel Honderich of Ontario upset number two seed Vicky Girard of Quebec 21-18, 11-21, 21-17.
In Boys Under 16 play the RA’s Liam Woodside advanced to the semi-finals with wins over Samuel Tessier of Quebec 21-11, 21-8, Hugo De Lorze of Manitoba 21-14, 21-15 and then took a hard fought three set victory over Avery Lee of Ontario 21-16, 19-21, 21-18. Woodside was defeated by top seed Felix Deblois-Beaucage of Quebec 21-8, 21-16. Deblois-Beaucage will meet Jackie Young, a 21-9, 19-21, 21-15 winner over another Ontario junior Darren Mak.
In Girls Under 19 the RA’s Emile Fleury-Larocque won a long three set battle with Vivian Yan of British Columbia 19-21, 21-16, 21-15 before losing in the quarter-finals to second seed Surahbi Kadam of Ontario 21-8, 21-17. The final will be an all Ontario affair as Kadam will meet number three seed Katelin Dejak in Sunday’s final.
In Boys Under 19, the RA’s Sergei Shatenko, seeded first, defeated Marc Olivier Brault of Quebec 21-10, 21-12, Andrew Wilkinson of Ontario 21-13, 21-14, Olivier Trudeau of Quebec 21-6, 21-7 and Kirk Hansen of Ontario 21-15, 21-15 to reach Sunday’s final. Shatenko will play Ontario’s Nyl Yakura.
Qufei Chen, of the RA Badminton Club partnered with Yoshua Hurlburt-Yu of Ontario in Mixed Double Under 16 to advance to Sunday’s final by defeating John Chernoff and Catherine Savard from Alberta and Quebec 21-9, 21-6, Nathan Cheng and Brittany Tam 21-16, 21-8.
In Boys Doubles Under 16, Andrew D’Souza and Liam Woodside of the RA defeated Albert’s John Chernoff and Nehaz Rana 21-10, 21-10 and Brian Jok and Andrew Lee 21-11, 21-19 before losing to number one seeds Felix Deblois-Beaucage of Quebec and Joshua Hurlburt-Yu of Ontario 18-21, 16-21.
In Girls Doubles Under 16, Qufei Chen seeded second with partner Stephanie Oey of British Columbia advanced to Sunday’s final against top seeds Vicky Girard and Adrianna Giuffre of Quebec and Alberta by defeating Cynthia Chen and Noemie Lirette of Quebec 21-18, 21-11 and third seeds Rachel Honderich and Brittany Tam of Ontario 23-21, 21-14.In Boys Under 19 Doubles action, The RA’s Cory Hum and Ontario’s Cao defeated Vincent Fortier and Sebastien St-Jean of Quebec 21-15, 21-8 before losing to seeds Andrew Wilkinson and Neil Tai-Pow 21-14, 21-13. Unseeded Andrew Lau of Ontario and the RA’s Sergei Shatenko advanced to Sunday’s final with wins over Ludovic Moreau and Jeremie Tousignant of Quebec 21-11, 21-7, David De La Chevrotiere and Pierre Paul Juneau, also of Quebec 21-13, 21-15 and avenged the defeat of fellow RA member Cory Hum by defeating Andrew Wilkinson and Neil Tai-Pow 18-21, 21-19, 23-21 to move into Sunday’s final against number one seeds Joseph Donaldson and Nyl Yakura.
In Girls Under 19 action Emile Fleury-Larocque and partner Ilizia Cloutier lost 21-18, 21-15 in the opening round. Sunday’s final will pit Ontario’s unseeded pair of Surahbi Kadam and Carrie Li against another Ontario pair, number two seeds, Jody Chan and Stephanie Yeung.
In the final event, Under 19 Mixed Doubles, Andrew D’Souza and Emile Fleury-Larocque of the RA defeated Guillaume Pilon and Anne-Marie Langlois of Quebec 21-12, 21-6 before losing to seeds Andrew Lau and Bethany So 21-19, 21-16.
The Yonex Quebec Junior Elite Series Badminton Tournament wrapped up today with the RA Badminton Club’s Qufei Chen collecting three gold medals in Girls Under 16 Singles and Doubles and taking the Under 16 Mixed Doubles event as well.
In Girls U16 Singles Chen, seeded first overall defeated Rachel Honderich of Ontario 21-9, 21-7. Chen partnered with British Columbia’s Stephanie Oey as the second seed proceeded to defeat the number one seeds Vicky Girard (Quebec) and Adrianna Giuffre (Alberta) 27-25, 21-11. Finally, partnered with Joshua Hurlburt-Yu of Ontario as the top seeds, they defeated the second seeds from Quebec Felix Deblois-Beaucage and Vicky Girard 21-16, 21-18.
In Boys U16 Singles Jackie Yeung (Ontario) the second seed knocked off top seed Felix Deblois-Beaucage 21-11, 9-21, 21-19. In Boys U16 Doubles Felix Deblois-Beaucage and Joshua Hurlburt-Yu defeated Darren Mak and Jerry Zhang of Ontario 21-18, 21-13.
In Boys U19 Singles the RA’s Sergei Shatenko, seeded first, quest to repeat as champion was thwarted by second seed Nyl Yakura of Ontario 21-12, 9-21, 21-18. Yakura partnered with Joseph Donaldson and seeded first overall again defeated Shatenko and partner Andrew Lau (Ontario) 20-22, 21-14, 21-14 to take the Boys U19 Doubles title. To claim his third gold medal Yakura and partner Katelin Dejak (Ontario), seeded second in U19 Mixed Doubles defeated top seeds Michael Diamond and Surahbi Kadam (both from Ontario) 21-19, 21-14.
In Girls U19 Singles Katelin Dejak won her second gold medal defeating Surahbi Kadam 21-14, 21-11. In Girls U19 Doubles Jody Chan and Stephanie Yeung defeated Surahbi Kadam and Carrie Li 13-21, 23-21, 21-12 in an all Ontario final.
