Rebounding from a 21-17, 21-11 defeat at the hands of American Sharon Ng, Nepean’s Qufei Chen won her next four matches helping Canada reach the podium. Chen who plays at the RA Badminton Club defeated Daneysha Sanata of Puerto Rico 13-21, 21-12, 21-6 and Shana-Kay Bailey of Jamaica 21-5, 21-15 in the remainder of group play, thereby ensuring Canada would play for medals. Unfortunately Chen’s 21-9, 21-15 win over Arantxa Salazar of Peru was not enough to send Canada into a gold medal rematch against the US team. Chen’s 21-9, 21-9 victory over Mariana Pedrol De Freitas of Brazil was the clinching match for Canada to take the bronze medal.
Today Peru and the USA battle for the gold.
Chen will next play in the individual events (Under 17 Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles) beginning tomorrow with Singles and Mixed Doubles.
